Winds increased yesterday afternoon and drifted new, low density snow and added depth to recently formed wind slabs. For today, the hazard is CONSIDERABLE on steep, wind loaded slopes above 6000 feet. On non-wind loaded slopes above 5000 feet the hazard is MODERATE, it remains possible to trigger an avalanche in weak snow buried 2-4 deep. Avoid steep, wind loaded terrain today and remain vigilant in assessing the snow pack for deeper instabilities.

Wind slabs at upper elevations continue to show signs of instability and the possibility to trigger persistent slabs (buried surface hoar and facets) still exists. The hazard is CONSIDERABLE on wind loaded slopes above 6000 feet and MODERATE on other terrain above 5000 feet. It remains important to carefully evaluate the snow pack in the areas you ski or ride by assessing the sensitivity of weak snow 2-4 feet deep and recent wind drifted snow.

Happy New Year! Wind slabs at upper elevations and a weak layer (surface hoar and facets) buried 2-4 feet deep throughout the advisory area require careful snowpack evaluation, cautious route-finding, and conservative decision making. The hazard is CONSIDERABLE above 6000 feet today particularly on wind loaded slopes. On all other slopes it is possible to trigger an avalanche making the hazard MODERATE. See the advisory discussion for more information on today's hazard rating.

Tricky snowpack conditions require conservative decision making and careful terrain selection. Numerous human triggered avalanches were reported over the past eight days failing on a weak layer (buried surface hoar) 2-3 feet from the surface. Moderate to strong north-northeast winds over the past 48 hours created wind slabs above 5000 feet. Avoid wind loaded slopes and continue to stick to simple, low angled terrain. The avalanche hazard is CONSIDERABLE above 5000 feet and MODERATE below 5000 feet today.

An AVALANCHE WARNING has been issued for the Swan Range for today. Substantial new snowfall and wind drifted snow in the past 24 hours added a considerable amount of stress to a previously weak snow pack. For today, terrain above 6000 feet in the Swan Range is rated HIGH. Travel in this terrain is not recommended and run-out zones should be avoided.

Substantial new snowfall and wind drifted snow in the past 24 hours added a considerable amount stress to a previously weak snow pack. Today, wind loaded terrain is rated as HIGH, travel in this terrain is not recommended. Non-windloaded slopes are rated CONSIDERABLE meaning that human triggered avalanches remain likely. Conservative decision making and terrain selection are essential today. Avoid wind loaded terrain and run-out zones.

Recent human triggered and natural avalanches associated with  a layer of buried surface hoar were reported in six of the last seven days. Though obvious signs of instability may subside, little has changed to improve this weak layer. For today the avalanche hazard is rated considerable above 5000 feet. Human triggered avalanches are likely, particularly on steep slopes. Continue to play it safe and avoid steep terrain and convex roll-overs.

AVALANCHE WARNING above 5000 ft. continues. HIGH hazard exists above 5000 ft. as human triggered avalanches are very likely on slopes steeper than 34 degrees. It's still likely to trigger an avalanche on less steep slopes and lower elevations where there is a CONSIDERABLE hazard. A weak layer (buried surface hoar) 2-3 feet below the surface continues to cause problems. Avalanches were reported every day since last Saturday and current conditions require sticking to simple low angled terrain.

AVALANCHE WARNING issued for entire advisory area including the Whitefish, Swan, and Flathead Ranges, and portions of Glacier Park. The avalanche hazard is HIGH. Very dangerous avalanche conditions exist. Human triggered avalanches reported every day over the last four days. New snow and winds over buried surface hoar 1.5 to 2.5 feet deep make human triggered avalanches very likely and natural avalanches likely with the potential to be large and destructive. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended.
