Skiing throughout the HWY 2 corridor has been good this week. Storm totals averaged between 30 and 40 cms, with light winds creating great riding condition down to 5500'. A bit sketchy at lower elevations, ski crampons for the up have been helpful.
Skiing in the Tranquil Basin was really nice, no wind effect, enough snow to keep you off the old wind and rain effected snow surfaces. Temps were in the low teens in the am and warmed up a bit as the day progressed. Some western aspects were showing some solar warming from short appearances from the sun, creating a thin zipper crust. The cloud cover was consistent throughout the day though to keep everything soft. Cloud cover from the past week seems to have kept any surface hoar from developing.
We didn't see any sings of instability while on our tour. We did encounter a few surface sloughs on steeper terrain of low density snow, they did run with some speed and entrained a fair amount of snow running until the slope angle eased off. Could take you for a ride. Cold weather seems to have helped the snow pack gain some strength, but there are still some slopes that would warrant some caution.
Picture shows the south east runs from the top of Mt. Furlong with a couple sloughs.
