Snowpit Observations
More detailed information about the snowpack:

Dug a hasty pit on  a 30 degree S-facing slope in the Sheep Creek drainage at aproximately 6800' in a burned area that was not very wind-effected.  This was a location that featured the best ski quality of today's tour on Snowshed.  HS: 210. Could not find the recently formed (buried) surface hoar.  Layers of greatest concern were a one cm crust at 165cm from the ground and a two cm crust at 155 cm from the ground and the facets below, between, and above these crusts.  Compression tests with hard force produced fractures in varying locations within this crust/facet sandwich with Q1 and Q2 shear quality.  Saw no obvious signs of instability on this slope and could not see evidence of any recent natural avalanches, though visibility was limited to about the 7000' level due to clouds.  Stuck to 30 degree and gentler terrain.   At noon at 7500' it was 20 degrees F, with light SW wind with moderate gusts.  Not much current snow transport due to yesterday's wind scouring and packing.  N and NE facing lee slopes near the summit had knee-deep soft wind slabs that sat on much less dense snow.  Stayed away from these.  Skiing  a 35 degree N-facing test slope at 7000' produced minor cracking of the 10 cm wind slab at the surface.  Not shooting cracks.   (Sorry, no pics--camera failure.)  This slab sat on about 10 cm of much less dense snow.  Could not find the recently buried surface hoar in this  (somewhat wind-effected) location.  Skiing was good in the trees all the way down to 4000', even though the surface snow was somewhat "inverted."  At 4000' the temp climbed above freezing at about 13:00.
