Wind tunnel

Traveled up the Shed 6/7 Ridge above Singleshot to assess distribution of 1/17 weak layers, including the buried surface hoar moat. Also monitor the incoming storm and check on the the not forgotten basal facets.

• Found 1-2 cm surface hoar between ~5000 and 5700 ft, southeast to east facing slopes. This layer sitting on 2 cm thick rain crust on and buried about 1 foot below the surface. 
• No red flag signs of instability on this layer. No shooting cracks, collapses, recent avalanches, or propagation in large column tests.
• Above the moat, found small facets on buried about 1 foot deep and sitting on thicker crust - seemed more like a sun crust. Again, no propagation in tests or red flags.
• Strong westerly winds drifting snow and creating small, thin wind slabs on easterly/ cross-loaded slopes. Mostly soft, but a few harder pillows.  Some short cracking when stomping on test slopes, but no reactive slabs by early afternoon.
• Snow started early afternoon; 0.5-1" accumulation over the next few hours.
