Upper DIsbrow Country Again

We found a lot of recent cornice formation/growth along grant ridge. We were presented with numerous opportunities to test the stability of relatively small cornices overhanging lower consequence terrain. We found that many of these cornices were very touchy and easily detached from the ridge with a hard step in the right spot. Below 6200 feet, these cornices were softer and very easily detached, whereas higher up, 6200-7000, the cornices were much firmer and resistant, but still detached cleanly with relative ease. The larger cornices that we broke were sizable enough to provide excellent opportunities to observe the slopes response sudden heavy loads. These larger blocks were 10-15 feet across and 3+ feet thick. The slopes below were often not terribly steep (less than 25 degrees), but in at least one spot we dropped these blocks onto a slope that was approaching 30 degrees. On this steeper slope, the storm/wind slab was relatively unresponsive (surprisingly). The blocks would roll and drag on the surface a bit, with no notable amount of sluffing and no cracking produced. The only cracking we observed was on the cornice/ridge itself. These blocks detached as isolated blocks on almost every occasion expect for one instance where the crack did propagate and detach two separate small cornices together. This occured on a softer cornice below 6200 feet. We observed one natural cornice failure that we believe failed on monday or tuesday. There were two cornices (side by side) that detached from the summit of our runs, ~7075 feet. These blocks traveled a notable distance down the N facing slope (approximately 600 feet). We believe that they detached monday or tuesday because there was about 4-5 inches of fresh snow covering the debris below We found the skiing stability to be excellent. No cracking or notable sluffing during our various descents. We skiied one N facing run, one NE facing run, And one E SE facing gully. There was about 4 inches of new throughout the day in sheltered areas and more in wind loaded terrain. In our SE gully run into Tunnel Creek, we encountered moist powder on a sun crust from monday. This crust did not become prevalent until 5800 feet and below. The bottom of this gully was littered with debris chunks and snow snails, likely from monday as well as prior warming events this month. No fresh wet debris from today's snow however.
