Quick Observation
Rode into and skied on multiple aspects in Kimmerly Basin in the southern Whitefish Range today.
We observed no obvious signs of instability - no recent (within 24 hours) avalanche activity, cracking, collapsing throughout the day.
We observed one old (appeared to be Sat. night/Sunday morning), shallow (4-6 inches deep), and small (20 feet wide) crown at about 4200 feet on the old landslide just after the hairpin along the Kimmerly Rd.
We traveled up to 7200 feet and along ridges and observed no wind loading throughout the day. Winds were calm to light from the SW. Stomping on multiple inconsequential test slopes revealed no wind slab.
Extended Column Tests at 6900 feet on NE aspect resulted in partial propagation across the column (ECTN12 x2 on decomposing new snow 25cm from surface). Total snow depth=180cm.
We traveled on gladed and open planar slopes up to 35ish degrees with excellent skiing and riding.
Classic (read: unfortunate) rime mist caused riming on goggles on ride out, but didn't seem to affect surface snow.
