Today I went into the Flathead Range to assess surface and wet snow conditions after a prolonged period of warm temperatures. Low and behold I found a deep slab avalanche off of Mount Cameahwait that likely occurred March 6th during a sustained period of high temperatures. More info in avalanche tab.
Today I felt confident with steep slopes on the southerly side of the compass at mid and upper elevations where surfaces refroze. I was surprised by the high quality loose granular/corn-like skiing at mid elevations.
Very limited information on this avalanche due to poor visibility and long distance. I anticipate it was cornice triggered, but I can not confirm that. I could verify a clean, crisp crown that closely resembled the deep slab from February 1st. My best estimate is that it was 4 to 5 feet deep. Estimated time was March 6th due to intense warm up and the crown looked lightly blown in.
