It is still there.

Today we went hunting for buried weak layers in the surface hoar factory (aka the southern Whitefish Range). 

• We dug multiple holes on north-facing aspects and received propagating pit results on 3 of 4 tests. The weak layer was 1 to 2 feet below the surface and easy to identify by a thick grey stripe.
• In one area the surface hoar was knocked over or already collapsed. This makes managing the problem difficult because some areas have it, and others don't on the same slope. 
• We received no other signs of instability. No cracking, collapsing, or whumpfing. 
• 3 to 4 inches of new snow fell overnight with light snowfall throughout the day. 
• We found one small wind slab that failed early this morning or last night. 
• Observed multiple wet loose avalanches on southerly aspects from recent warm temperatures and solar input. These ranged from small to large in size.

We managed slope angles while skinning through areas that harbored buried surface hoar. For our descent, we headed for a larger path that was east-facing. We were confident that any surface hoar was knocked over by pre-frontal winds before it was buried. After digging to confirm our theory, we enjoyed steep riding. The recent dry spell made three inches feel like a powder day.
