Dormant weak layers on Mt. Brown

The eastern portion of our advisory area has been the most talkative for persistent slabs recently, so we traveled to Mt Brown near Lake McDonald to monitor conditions.

• No cracking, collapsing, or other signs of instability on our ascent. Stability tests gave unreactive results: slabs appeared to be too soft at mid elevations, and weak layers at upper elevations showed signs of strengthening under current slabs.
• Light snowfall all day. There is up to 6” of recent, fluffy snow at the surface, which could act as a weak layer for the incoming storm. There is plenty of snow available for wind transport, although winds remained light today. 
• We skied steep, planar or concave terrain and saw no signs of instability, other than shallow sluffing and mini slab pockets where the snow surface was kissed by the wind.
