Dickey Creek NE wind effect

We traveled to the south fork of Dickey Creek to observe wind effects from the recent NE wind event.

• Large swaths of east and southeast facing terrain near and above treeline showed evidence of wind scouring from the NE wind event.
• Sheltered north facing terrain retained up to 12" of low-density snow.
• Non-sheltered north facing terrain above 5500' had a mix of low-density snow and wind slab. The wind slab was 4-8" thick with pockets up to 12" thick. The slab was not bonding well to the underlying wind board.
• Instabilities noted today were cracking in the wind slab and 1 small intentionally triggered wind slab avalanche.
