Today's objective was to assess persistent weak layers before the next round of snow.
- Found 1 to 2 feet of settled snow that made for excellent riding conditions in wind-protected areas. Near ridgelines, the surface had a much more dense, slaby feel from the last round of winds.
- Ski cutting test slopes were all unreactive. No shooting cracks or collapsing.
- Two of our three pits had propagating results in large column tests. Failing on a layer of surface hoar and precip particles below the 12/31 crust.
- With a lower snow line, we dug one pit on a SSE aspect at 5500'. Large column tests failed with moderate force down 40 cms. Height of snow was 70 cms.
Due to the nature of the weak layer in our snowpits, and given the terrain we were in, we stuck to slopes with angles near 30 degrees.
Very hard to pick out the details given the distance. Confirmed debris 2/3 down track. My best bet was that it ran Jan 8th given that we could still see debris.
