We toured up into the upper Disbrow drainage via Grant Ridge today. We felt the ice crust underneath 3-4 inches of dry snow up to around ~6300 feet. We found surface hoar developing most of the way up on our ascent. Winds were gusting at times and transporting snow, but overall things were quite pleasant and calm all day. We dug at 6700 feet on north and east aspects:
North Aspect 6700 35 degree HS80 Failure at 70 cm on thin rain/ice crust ectn11 Failure at 50 cm on ice mass ectn21
East Aspect 6700 30 degree HS150 Failure at 122 cm on thin rain crust ectn11 Failure at 90 cm on thick ice mass ectn28
We noticed large avalanches from days prior on Nyack and Great Northern’s E and NE aspects. One very large slide on Great Northern’s NE aspect went to the ground, though we could not see the length of the run out.
