Avalanche Location:
Witnessed the debris from an avalanche that likely ran during yesterday's wind loading event. Slopes above 4000 feet showed widespread wind effects from 24-36 hours of moderate to strong winds. A large cornice overhangs the northeast slope of Nyack Mountain, above Crystal and Cascadilla Creeks. With a monocular, we were able to clearly see a crown 50 feet below the ridgeline on a steep (38-40 degree) northeast aspect. We estimated crown height to be 2 foot. In the path below the crown, we could see fractures on the flanks of the avalanche path (see photo). One of these flanks (right hand flank in the photo), appears to have deposted a small debris pile about 500 feet below the starting zone. The main path ran close to 1000 feet, stopping on a sparsely treed bench around 6100 feet and deposited a much larger debris pile (D2.5).
