Day off tour; went to Continental Divide to try and out run today’s warmup and deteriorating stability.
Cool temperatures this morning quickly warmed up by mid day, with some solar warming amplified by greenhouse effect. By noon, wet loose avalanches were releasing at all elevations, mostly D1. Northerly aspects also produced rollerballs, pinwheels, and a few small wet loose slides.
We found 55 cm of April snow over the last rain crust and non propagating fractures and 4 ft cracks on a mid-storm weak layer. Easterly winds had redistributed the snow in exposed areas. We also observed several collapses in wind drifted areas.
We left at 12:30 before any precip started. A warm dark cloud was quickly approaching.
