Went for a nice Cross Country tour on Going to the Sun Road with my dad! Beautiful views of the carnage!
Wet snow on the road started to refreeze by the time we were leaving and made for easier travel. About an inch of new heavy snow from last night on the road.
Most avalanche paths had debris in the runout from wet loose slides (south face of Stanton, north Brown gullies (pic 1) etc.) The wet slide debris looked D2 and above.
The ridge between Stanton and Vaught had a nice large zigzagging crown across most of the bowl. (picture 2). D3+ for sure
Vaught had an aesthetic D2 that I took a picture of lower on the SE ridge. (Picture 4)
Mt. Cannon had several wet loose avalanches run today when the sun came out and hit the south bowl. The avalanches entrained a lot of snow and I heard trees snapping from a little bit before the avalanche lake trailhead. Bowl looked clean in the morning and then had a lot of debris above and below the ice climbing in the afternoon. (pic 3)
Beautiful tour with lots of good views!
Looked like more snow "stuck" to the peaks up high this storm than previous storms this season. I can imagine natural slides running full path and surprising folks in usual safe zones.
