This week on As the World Terns:
If you’ve been following the snowpack tracker you’ll know that we’ve been swimming in a sea of green and yellow this month. Several warm-ups have produced crusts which cap the snowpack and limit the amount of loose snow available for wind transport. They are also slower to destabilize with warming temperatures or solar input. Incremental amounts of new snow have done little to increase the avalanche hazard. Weekly SWE totals were highest in the Flathead range with 1.6 inches at Flattop. However, observers Wednesday and Thursday reported recent snow of up to 8 inches in the Whitefish range and more in the Flathead. This modest refresh combined with moderate winds produced windslab on lee aspects. These were most touchy on Wednesday and have since trended towards stubborn. We continue to monitor the advisory area for more clusters of Corniced-19/20. Remember to wash your hands, don’t touch your face, and avoid cornices. The impending arctic cold front might make a good excuse to self-quarantine.
