This weekend we took advantage of the stable snowpack and stable weather to center punch some lines on most aspects in the Middle fork. We were real confident with the snow pack on Saturday skiing high in Dickey creek on the North facing slopes. Because of the warm temperatures we skied only North facing aspects between 7400 and 5000. It skied well on supportable surfaces. The storm began Saturday afternoon around 5. At the Dickey trailhead it was snow, but driving back to Whitefish it turned to heavy rain around Stanton Lake and through the canyon till we hit dry roads in west glacier.
On Sunday we skied most aspects in the snowslip drainage. There was an inch of new snow on the highway and 3 new inches at the higher elevations. All aspects skied well with no new instabliliteis. The trail breaking was diffiicult on the aspects that had a crust under the new snow (west and east). We saw mostly cloudy skies with breaks of sun at times mostly in the morning and early afternoon. The winds were light. The hard freeze overnight and new snow helped keep the spirit of winter alive for these powder gals!
