Destructive wet loose activity in the Northern Whitefish Range

We found numerous destructive wet loose avalanches that ran naturally yesterday and quieter conditions today.

• We found a widespread wet loose cycle on Southeast to West aspects from Saturday and Sunday. On South aspects, Sunday’s slides gouged to the ground around 5500’, consistently producing debris piles large enough to damage cars or break small trees (D2.5-D3).
• We monitored sunbaked paths today until 3:30 pm and saw no natural avalanche activity, rollerballs, or pinwheels. 
• On southerly aspects, the snow surface became mushy and unsupportive on foot around 2 pm. Although it appears to be transitioning to less reactive, I was still able to produce pinwheels on a steep easterly test slope this afternoon. 
• We felt comfortable riding on steep northerly aspects and crossing under southerly aspects while keeping eyes up above us. We avoided riding on very steep southerly aspects as snowpack warmed up this afternoon.
