The wind and the damage done

Checked out the effects of Monday night's winds on ridges and slopes adjacent to Whitefish Mountain Resort. 

• Winds today strong mid slope - blowing uphill on backside of WMR; downhill on front. Light to moderate elsewhere. 
• Monday night's winds had widespread effects on the snow surface - scouring on lee sides, sculpted drifts on ridges, drifts downwind of trees, needles and twigs on the snow surface
• We experienced no shooting cracks or collapses, despite stomping on halibut- and whale-sized drifts on multiple aspects and elevations. 
• We found a 5-8" thick soft slab sitting above a sun crust on a south-facing slope at 6150 ft. Based on hand shears and other test, this was the most suspect near-surface layer we found, though even it did not react when ski cut.
